Push Present: Sweet or Over-the-top?

Where did this (pretty great) idea come from?

Believe it or not, push presents have a long history, even though the idea just became popular in the United States. In the United Kingdom and India, the “push present” has been around for hundreds of years, possibly even longer. There are some claims that these baby baubles have been around since the 1700’s.” as per presentpush.com.
“A push present (also known as a “push gift,” or “baby mama gift”) is a present a father gives to the mother to mark the occasion of her giving birth to their child… The giving of push presents has supposedly grown in the United States in recent years.” As per the Huffington Post.

According to last week’s poll on our Instagram Story (@karenash_newyork), there was a 70/30 split--30% of people voted a “push gift” is just “too much.”  70% voted “sweet.”  -This notion of giving a “push gift” is not pretentious at all; it’s one way of showing appreciation.

What's a “reasonable” gift?

Unlike engagement rings, there is no rule of thumb on this topic.  At KarenAsh, we feel it’s up to the couple, and it is certainly not about how much is spent.  The best gifts are thoughtful and PERSONALIZED-- usually with a sentimental stone or engravement.  For such a significant milestone, you can’t go wrong with customized jewelry.   This gift is one that should be adored and adorned forever-- hopefully, even through those “terrible twos” and dreaded adolescent years.

Customize with the baby’s name, initials, birthdate, or birthstone, quote, etc. Always quality over quantity if you intend to pass the gift on.

Whether you roll your eyes when hearing about famous celebrity “push presents” or think they are totally well deserved, here are some of the most memorable ones in pop-culture:

Famous celebrity push gifts:

Beyonce- $35,000 8-10 carat diamond ring with a blue tanzanite or sapphire (it’s unclear). Which is so suitable considering her daughters name “Blue Ivy”.

Mariah Carey- $12,000 custom white gold necklace with diamonds and pink sapphires with her twins’ names. The personalization of adding their names was super sweet!

Kim Kardashian- $1 million+ Lorraine Schwartz diamond choker necklace covered in numerous white diamonds with her son’s name “Saint”.  This one may be a little extravagant?

Jennifer Lopez- $300,000, Canary yellow diamond ring, and a $2.5 million custom diamond earrings with the children's initials.  Clearly sparing no expense here!

Kate Middleton- Personalized brooch that features white diamonds with a fancy pink diamond as the centerpiece.  Pink diamonds=the win.

Nicole Kidman- For her first child, she received a diamond-encrusted trinity ring from Cartier. The second- a custom emerald and diamond cross.  Very nice, Keith!

Chrissy Teigen- Poking fun at the practice of expensive over-the-top push gifts, she received a perineal irrigation bottle.  What else does she really need when she has John Legend for a husband?

Mila Kunis- Decided to create her own gift. She designed a beautiful motherhood ring with a well-known Italian jeweler.  The ring is made of 18 karat gold featuring an emerald from Zambia.  Anything original--we love that!

Kylie Jenner- Received $1.4m Ferrari from boyfriend Travis Scott on the birth of their daughter, Stormi.  Nothing like sibling rivalry-- this trumped Kim’s gift.

Conclusion:

Whether it’s a bottle of special champagne to toast (after 9 months of not being able to) or a sweet customized piece with the baby’s name, initials, birthstone, or birth date, etc... The gift of choice should be meaningful to the new mom and also show appreciation for carrying the bundle of joy selflessly and safely into this world.
